Thoughts for New Working Moms

I know this is a bit of a departure from what I usually write about, but several women I know are new moms or are pregnant. So I have dusted off some advice my sister and I put together years ago in case you find it useful.

  • In the immortal words of Calvin Trillin: “Try to get one that doesn’t spit up.” (Note – I totally failed on this front)
  • Do get all the stuff you can fit in your house and afford–swing AND bouncy chair AND Exersaucer AND sling AND Baby Bjorn. if it buys you even 5 minutes of respite, it’s worth it!
  • Don’t eat after midnight! Just because you are up doesn’t mean you need food. For most women, it takes 9 months to put on the weight, and 9 months (at least) to take it off. If you get to a year and you still are carrying extra weight, join Weight Watchers.
  • Don’t be the expert on all things baby. If you have a partner, leave him or her in charge while you go out (even if all you do is drive to a mall parking lot and nap in your car) so your partner can do things his/her way and learn some tricks of his/her own. Don’t micromanage what s/he dresses the kid in, or how s/he plays with the kid, or how s/he changes the diapers–it’s way better to have the help, than to have it done the way you would do it.
  • Don’t make any promises about being back on email within a week of delivery. It’s hard to know how you’ll feel at that point, so it’s better to under-promise.
  • Don’t think that your maternity leave is going to be the time you get all your projects done around the house (or feel free to think that, but let yourself off the hook if it doesn’t happen!). If the baby is still alive and gaining weight at the end of the day, your job is done. There’s nothing wrong with sitting on the couch watching A Baby Story on TLC for 6 hours a day if that’s what you and the baby want to do.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask for help! It takes a village. Ask any mother, we are all part of the sorority, and we will be there for you.
  • A corollary to the above –  do figure out what you’re going to outsource and/or significantly lower your standards on. Shopping, cooking, cleaning, laundry – all are fair game. You definitely can’t do it all the way you did pre-baby.
  • Do make sure you have a pair of comfortable, supportive slippers or shoes to walk around the house in, in case your baby is only happy if you’re on the move. Barking Dog Shoes is a great resource for recommendations.
  • If you decide to try pumping at work, do make sure you have a high grade pump, and practice at home so you get the hang of it. Figure out where you can pump, and if that turns out to be your office, think about how you’re going to maintain your privacy. You’ll also want to work out how you’re going to store the milk, and what supplies you need so you have to do the minimum of washing up during the day. Pumping straight into storage bags is easiest, if you can manage that.

And my last do – savor this time with your newly expanded family! Having a baby is an incredibly fun and rewarding experience, and it only gets better.
